Orthodontics or braces treatment is done to straighten crooked teeth and ensure a harmonious relationship between teeth in the upper and lower jaw.
Metallic or ceramic braces are placed either on the outer or inner surfaces of teeth and connected with a metallic wire to bring about the movement of teeth into more desirable positions.
Once you have chosen to undergo this treatment it is important to follow a few things to ensure optimum results.
Commitment to Treatment
It is definitely not easy to have metal stuck on your teeth for over one year. A metallic smile can be quite frustrating in the beginning. However, with time the body accommodates and the discomfort eases. It is important that you are patient and follow all the instructions. Early discontinuation of treatment can be detrimental.
Oral Hygiene
Maintaining oral hygiene can be difficult with metal braces placed on your teeth. They can trap food and plaque around them causing gum inflammation and tooth decay. Therefore, it is necessary to follow a strict oral hygiene protocol.
Typically an orthodontic brush which is a little different from your regular toothbrush is recommended. To clean the space between the metal braces and teeth, an interdental brush is recommended as it fits in the space well. It is also important to use a mouth rinse such as Listerine to prevent gingivitis. At times a fluoride mouth rinse or professionally applied fluoride is also recommended.
Diet
Diet modifications are necessary during orthodontic treatment. Eat healthy and avoid junk food whether you are undergoing orthodontic treatment or not.
Avoid
Discomfort
During orthodontic treatment is due to the metal braces rubbing against the inner sides of the lips and cheeks. this can cause small sore spots or ulcers. Wax prescribed by the orthodontist can be applied over the braces to overcome this problem. Eventually, your lips and cheeks will get used to the presence of the metal braces and your ulcers or sore spots will stop appearing.
Active orthodontic movement can be painful, occasionally. Take a painkiller as prescribed by the orthodontist or dentist. Refrain from using the medication if not prescribed.
Rinsing with warm salt warm 3 to 4 times a day for a week can help ease the discomfort.
Never miss your appointments
Remember, if you are undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed metallic or ceramic braces then it is important to visit your orthodontist regularly. Usually, a monthly visit is prescribed. During this time if your braces become loose or are broken or lost, please report it immediately to get a replacement. Loose braces if unreported can cause the delay in treatment. Failure to visit regularly can delay treatment and result in an unfavourable outcome.
Orthodontic treatment ensures a healthy smile.
So, good luck. Keep Smiling.
