Laser Assisted Peri-Implant treatment

What is Peri Implant?
Peri-implant disease, more commonly referred to as peri-mucositis or peri-implantitis is an implant complication which is actually an inflammatory disease of the soft tissues that surrounds a dental implant. It is accompanied by loss of bone which exceeds the normal physiologic remodelling. The primary cause of this dental disease is due to the formation of a bacterial biofilm on the surface of the dental implant which interacts with the host tissue causing destruction to the supporting bone making the implant loose.

Top Signs and Symptoms to Identify Peri Implant
It is extremely important for the proper identification of the peri-implant so that the treatment can be started at the right time which helps in the prevention of further complications of the disease. Some of the common signs and symptoms for the identification of peri-implant are as mentioned below.

  • Reddening and swelling of the gums
  • Bleeding from the gums
  • Implant mobility
  • Changing the colour of the gum around the implant
  • Sensitivity of gum increases
  • Implant is exposed
  • Moderate to severe pain around the site of the implant
  • Surrounding tissues of implant excrete pus

Keeping an eye on these symptoms will help you understand the occurrence of peri-implant.

Treatment Procedures
In general, there are two options of treatment available for the failing dental implants.

  1. Surgical option
  2. Laser treatment

As can be understood from the name, the surgical option cuts open the gum and flap back the tissues for the exposure of the fixture of the implant. Then the cleaning of the infected implant is done. After that, the additional growth factors are placed in the area and finally, the gum tissue is stitched back in its place.

Laser-assisted peri-implant treatment involves minimally invasive procedures with the help of a laser that helps in reduction of bacteria load and inflammation. The process is devoid of any kinds of cuttings and stitches which makes the procedure more comfortable in nature.

Procedure of Laser Treatment for Peri Implant
Researches have revealed that laser therapy is quite promising and a convenient method of treatment for the peri-implant disease as compared to the traditional surgical method. In this case, the specifically pulsed laser radiations are used for the ablation of bacteria ultimately helping in the cure of the peri-implant region. In this therapeutic strategy for treating per implant disease, a monochromatic light source and a photosensitizer are used along with the presence of oxygen for the generation of some reactive oxygen species. These particular species help in causing oxidative damage to the infected cells. A fibre which is equal to the width of three human hair is inserted between the gum and the implant. The energy of the light rays helps to kill bacteria, vaporising the cement and ultimately stimulating the stem cells found in the mode for the reduction of infection and promotion of healing.

Benefits of the Process
The prime benefits of laser-assisted peri-implant treatment are as follows.

  • No cutting and no stitching
  • Less painful
  • High target specificity
  • Low chemical risk or thermal side effects
  • Less recovery and healing time
  • Low probability of microbial resistance

Therefore, it is quite clear as to why the laser-assisted peri-implant treatment is the most preferred option in this regard.
