Do you have gaps between teeth that are keeping you from having the smile you want? Does a problem in the appearance of your smile make you feel self-conscious or discouraged? Are any of your teeth discoloured, broken, misaligned or stained? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then there are great options that can help you get the smile you desire.
Often, strong but exhausted teeth just call for a “facelift”. That’s where Dental Veneers come in. Like veneers on fine furniture and countertops, dental veneers provide a clear, perfect covering over damaged or discoloured teeth. Dental veneers have recently increased in popularity. These custom-made dental veneers are long-lasting, natural-looking, and enhance both the functionality and appearance of your teeth. Best of all, they give back the poise and confidence that comes with a healthy dazzling smile.
Dental veneers are wafer-thin coatings or shells of tooth colored materials individually crafted for each patient attached to the front surface of teeth to enhance and restore its shape. They’re permanently bonded to your teeth and are often made from porcelain or resin-composite materials. Dental veneers aren’t the same as Dental implants or crowns. Veneers cover the front surface of the tooth. Crowns, on the other hand, encase the entire tooth, while dental implants replace the entire tooth. However, these advanced dental treatments can be combined with veneers to provide patients with comprehensive cosmetic results and truly stunning smiles.
Although dental veneers have become especially popular in the past couple of decades, they originated nearly one hundred years ago during the early days of the Hollywood. In 1928, Dr.Charles Pincus, a celebrated Hollywood dentist created the first dental veneers and he used it as a way to enhance actors’ smiles on the screen. His idea utilized temporary false fronts to the Hollywood stars, to give them the type of dazzling, onscreen smiles; however, he lacked the technology to permanently affix the porcelain. In the late 1960s, Dr. Michael Bunocore used a mild acidic solution etched on the teeth and created stronger bonding surface for dental sealants and restorations. In 1982, J.R. Calamia and R.J. Simonsen applied Dr. Bunocore's techniques to the application of porcelain veneers by using hydrofluoric acid adhesive. All of a sudden, everyone had access to the stunning Hollywood smiles of days of the past.
There are two main types of traditional dental veneers: composite and porcelain
Composite veneers: They are inexpensive veneer dental restoration that can be applied in one dentist visit. They are most usually made out of plastic or resin, can be easily repaired if broken and can last up to seven years.
Porcelain veneers: They serve the same purpose as composite veneers. However, they are made in a laboratory. Porcelain veneers are made to measure and cemented onto the tooth surface, which is a little like false nails.
No-prep veneers: no-prep veneers are regarded by the dentists as a viable alternative to traditional veneers for specific cases. Traditional dental veneers require more intensive prep work when compared to newer alternatives like “no-prep veneers.” These no-prep veneers(like Lumineers, Vivaneers, Durathin Veneers etc) are ultra-thin translucent porcelain shells that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth in just one visit. This prep-less veneer is less invasive to apply and last up to 20 years with proper care.
No-prep veneers require minimal tooth preparation or alteration for proper placement (unlike Traditional dental veneers which involves irreversible painful procedure of grinding down the tooth structure, sometimes removing some of the teeth even past the enamel) rather than removing layers of tooth under the enamel, no-prep veneers only affect the enamel. In many cases, no-prep veneers don’t even need local anaesthetics.
No-prep veneers are not suitable for everyone. This may be suitable for persons seeking to effectively address a few cosmetic dental conditions, which includes:
